We had an awesome day of fun and games at Taste of Camp this week! Our bunks split into three teams for exciting and silly relay races. Campers cheered their friends and counselors on as they hopped, skipped, and jumped their way across the Social Hall. After the first snow fall of the year, we couldn't resist heading outside to play! Everyone had a blast having snowball fights and working together to build creations out of the snow. Check out the pictures and videos of the fun below!
Taste of Camp turned into a Winter Wonderland this week! We had a blast making our own snow out of just a few simple ingredients. Our amazing Counselors in Training led a fun-filled winter Carnival with pipe cleaner snowflake making, pin the carrot nose on the snowman, a snowball toss, and winter archery. The campers earned tickets to trade in for delicious hot chocolate at the end of our afternoon!
After the excitement of Big Buddy day and a week off, we were so excited to be back at Taste of Camp on Sunday!
In anticipation of Thursday, we got into the Thanksgiving spirit by decorating bunk gingerbread turkeys. Each bunk's unique creation can be found below. Which one do you think is the best?
We then sent our bunks off to their private rehearsal spaces, where they prepared for our Lip Sync Battle. Our youngest campers, the Waffles, rocked out to Uptown Funk. The Pancakes choreographed an interpretive dance to Fight Song by Temple Shalom's own Rachel Platten. The French Toast made up a fun dance to Believer. Our oldest campers, the Crepes, created their own Lip Sync Battle within our Taste of Camp Lip Sync Battle, and ultimately won the competition.
There is no Taste of Camp this week. Happy Thanksgiving!
We had an AMAZING Big Buddy day this week at Taste of Camp!
When our campers arrived, they received a card with the picture of a movie character on it. Our Big Buddies lined up in the Social Hall holding up movie posters, and their Little Buddies raced over to match their picture with the movie and meet their Big Buddy! The Buddies then spent the afternoon enjoying lunch, cookie decorating, gaga, Lego building, games, a photo booth (complete with make-your-own-props and instant pictures), s'mores, and tons of bonding! We could go on and on about the incredible relationships between the youngest and oldest Temple Shalom youth that we saw develop in front of our eyes, but we think the pictures say it all. Check them out below!
This week, Taste of Camp really lived up to its name! We spent the afternoon traveling to some of our favorite camp activities with our bunks, getting to see what a day in the life at camp would be like.
At Art, campers used markers, coffee filters, and spray bottles to make their own version of stained glass. They watched as the colors blended together, and held their creations up to see the light shine through. At Archery, the campers used Nerf bows and arrows to aim at their target. They worked together to see which bunk could get the highest score, with the Crepes taking the prize! Of course, no camp day is complete without a game of Gaga! Campers had a blast turning the Shain Room into a Gaga court, and are looking forward to when we're back in the Social Hall and can break out our giant inflatable court. Perhaps the most entertaining station was Rikud, or Dance. The campers got silly following along to different songs and videos, and put on a show for everyone who passed by!
We have a break from Taste of Camp this week while our staff are away at the 6th Grade Retreat, but are so excited to be back on Nov. 5 for our first Buddy Day! Our Big Buddies are looking forward to hanging out with their Little Buddies, and we can't wait for the big reveal!
We were so excited to be back at Taste of Camp on Sunday after a few weeks off. Our campers and counselors had a blast participating in the Great Pumpkin Race! The bunks took turns rotating through different challenges to complete their mission: create a Pumpkin Volcano.
Campers had the chance to get creative while decorating their own miniature pumpkins. They then took to the stage where they acted out fall-themed objects and actions in a silly game of charades. It was such a beautiful day outside, we couldn't resist the opportunity to head outdoors and launch film canister rockets using just alka seltzer and water. Campers then got in some friendly competition at our Taste of Camp version of a carnival water gun race!
After each challenge was complete, the bunk received an ingredient necessary in creating a Pumpkin Volcano. Once they had all four elements, we all headed outside to scoop out our pumpkins, fill them up, and watch what happens. While the initial eruption may have been a tad underwhelming, our campers got to experiment with the different ingredients to see what they needed to add to make the volcano work!
Check out pictures and videos from our day below, and check back next week after we spend this Sunday doing some of our favorite typical camp activities!
Taste of Camp got off to a great start on our first day!
Upon arrival, we revealed our 2017-2018 theme chosen by our wonderful counselors: Breakfast Foods! The campers split into bunks with their counselors and had a blast participating in get-to-know-you activities planned by their staff. The Waffles (Grades K-1) worked together to build tall towers out of spaghetti and marshmallows. The Pancakes (2nd Grade) headed outside for a fun game of freeze dance. The French Toasts (3rd Grade) bonded over silly name games, and the Crepes (Grades 4-5) got creative playing Mad Libs.
Our bunks then came together to create bunk banners and bunk cheers, which they shared with the group. Check them out in the slideshow below!
We finished our day enjoying the beautiful weather outside, spending time with our bunk mates and running around playing games.
Taste of Camp is only possible with the help of our amazing Counselors, who are all high school students. This year, we are excited to also launch our Jr. Counselor program! We opened this program to current 6th Graders who were 5th Grade Taste of Campers last year. We hope this program gives our Jr. Counselors an opportunity to stay involved in the ToC community, and prepares them to become counselors themselves in the future!
